DRV8824 PowerPad / EVM schematics

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8824

Hi,

My customer encounter a problem with DRV8824 in their application.

(1)

Now, the customer is checking difference between their board and

a reference, EVM board.

Checking schematics of EVM(CPG004_SCH.pdf), they found

there are 0.1uF capacitors (C9 and C10) in parallel to Rsense

resistors (R5 and R6).

* Are these capacitors absolutely required ?

* Why are these capacitors used in EVM ?

(2)

Also, the customer has a question about PowerPad of DRV8824.

Is it mandatory that the PowerPad is connected to GND ?

Or, is it ok if the PowerPad is soldered/connected to heat-spreading plane ?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Rak

  • Rak,

    1. These capacitors on the sense node are there to filter high-frequency noise, for a more stable voltage that better represents current.  They are not required, and the amount of noise varies per system.

    2. Since this device has separate GND pins, it's not mandatory to connect the PowerPAD to GND.  But it's generally a good idea to do that, since large GND planes have electrical advantages and they also spread heat.

    Best regards,
