Driving 4 stepper motors in parallel with a DRV8824

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8824

If within proper current limits is it ok to drive 4 identical stepper motors off of one DRV8824 controller?

  • You can drive steppers in parallel.  Of course, there may be some motor mismatch, causing them to not spin in perfect synchronization.

  • Thanks for your quick reply. Do you think such a parallel scheme may in any way shorten the lifetime of a stepper motor?
  • No, I don't think it would affect the motor's lifetime.  Lifetime should be based on how much current is going through the windings, and the number of revolutions the motor has spun.  I guess after billion revolutions, bearings or other frictional components will wear.  Also, 1A through small wires over thousands of hours could cause an electromigration type of effect.  Neither are related to motors being in parallel with 1 driver.
