DRV8843 Sleep line question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8843

I have a customer that is using the DRV8843 in a stepper motor drive applicaiton.  They have noticed a strange phenomenon and would like to understand if they are doing something wrong.  I will try to describe the steps to recreate the issue:

Their MCU controls the sleep line in the application (not enable). The MCU moves sleep to high rotates the stepper motor and then moves sleep to low.  All is working as expected.  Now the customer wants to keep power on the stepper motor at all times, so they simply cut the trace on the sleep line and tie it to 5V (VM).  Now only half of the DRV8843 is active.  The other half does not even try to fire.

What other information do you need to help us understand what is happening here?

Thank you so much!

  • Hi Jarrett,

    Some follow up questions...

    1. Can you provide a schematic of the circuit and where precisely the line was cut and tied to? I am confused when you say tied to 5V (VM). VM for this device can only go down to 8.2V.

    2. Can you clarrify on what you mean by half does not work? One of the h-bridges? Which h-bridge? Any other functions?

    3. Can they try this mod on a different PCB? Is it possibly they damaged some of the other traces when they made the mod. It would be good to verify the connections of all the DRV inputs.
