DRV3201-Q1 Use for DC motor H-bridge pre-driver

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV3201-Q1

Hello,

Please answer following question from customer.

They want to confirm if DRV3201-Q1 can be used for DC motor H-bridge pre-driver.

(Because they want to use same PC board for DC motor and 3 Phase Motor application using DRV3201-Q1.)

They need to use “Drain Source Voltage Monitoring function”.

Please advise how can we use DRV3201-Q1 for DC motor H-bridge pre-driver.

Best Regards.

  • Hi Ushikubo-san,

Our expert on this device has been notified.
  • Ushikubo-san,

The DRV3201-Q1 can be used for DC Motor H-bridge pre-driver applications by not using one of the phases on the device. For example, the external FET for the 3rd phase could be non populated on the DC board, as long as IHS3 and ILS3 remain logic low. The VDS monitoring function will continue to work for the 1st and 2nd phase. If the IHS3 or ILS3 pins were to go to logic high without the FET populated, the device will detect a VDS fault and shut down the pre-driver. It is up to the application to ensure this does not happen, either through firmware, or pulling these inputs to ground.

In the 3 phase application, the FETs for the 3rd phase remains populated and all three phases will continue to work with VDS monitoring function.

  • Hello William-san,

    Please answer additional question.
Please advise if I can use 3 Half-Bridge separately, for example use 2 Half-Bridge for H-Bridge and remaining Half-Bridge for another purpose or 3 Half-Bridge separately for different purpose.

    Best Regards.
  • Ushikubo-san,

It is possible to use each half-bridge separately from a three phase application, however the safety features take effect on all of the gate drivers, so if there is a fault on one of the half-bridges that causes the pre-driver to shut down, it will shut down all three phases. So in that sense they are not separate.

If you can provide details on the specific application (here on E2E or through the sales/FAE in your area) we can provide feedback as to whether or not it makes sense to use the device in this way and can provide more specific recommendations.

  • William-san,

Thank you for your quick reply.
I reported your answer to customer.
I will contact you when customer decide to use DRV3201 as 3 phase separated.

    Best Regards.
