Stepper / DC motor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8824, DRV8830

I am using 2-7 V Small Voltage DC motor in my application. For above motor, can we use stepper motor driver as driving circuitry such as DRV8824( DRV8824 ~ Stepper Motor Controller).

Logically, can we use stepper motor driver to run DC motor. Is there any pros and cons?

Pls advise.

  • Vaibhav,

DRV8824 supply range is 8Volt onwards so for your voltage range it will not work.

For low voltage DC motor application, you can look for DRV8830/8837/8838. For compelete listing refer to: http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/motor-drivers/brushed-dc-bdc-drivers-products.page#p358min=0;4

Logically, Stepper motor driver can be used to drive brushed DC but there depending upon driver, there will be overheads:

    1. Typically stepper drivers will have 2 H-bridge whereas for single brushed application 1 h-bridge is required

    2. Stepper driver comes with indexing logic for micro-stepping required for steppers, this will not be required for brushed DC.
