DRV8662 Small Piezos for Haptic Feedback application (2015)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8662, DRV2605

Hi,

I'm wondering if there has been any development in haptic piezo actuators. I'm looking for an actuator that would work well in a wearable device to provide haptic feedback to the user in the form of vibration similar to a mobile phone notification. It would need to be relatively small: the largest dimension 10 mm or less.

Can you recommend anything like this that could showcase the advantage of the DRV8662's boost voltage capabilities? I have tried using the DRV8662 evaluation board with a Murata piezo, but I believe that the capacitance of that particular piezo was too high for the driver to handle.

Regards,

Brandon

  • Hi Brandon,
I think we have seen one or two, but I cannot find the part numbers. Allow me some time to ask around and find them.
  • Hey Brandon,
I found out that those were some experimental actuators and were not released. Since you are targeting wearables, have you thought about using LRA? It has the lowest power consumption with a good amount of acceleration. Also we have a nice reference design to reference www.ti.com/.../drv2605evm-bt.
  • Hi Rodney,

Thank you for replying to my post. I have looked into LRAs and I haven't quite found one with the form factor that best suits my application. I bought the DRV2605 dev kit about a month ago and I really liked how it worked. However, it looks like LRAs generally come in coin-form. For my application it would be better if it were a bar-form approx 10x4x4 mm. Do LRAs like that exist?

Also about the piezos. I am open to any experimental piezos if you know of any. I recently sampled some new piezos from Murata that had extremely low power consumption: ~6 mW with a decent amount of vibration.

    Best,
    Brandon
