DRV8312 eval kit options?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8312, DRV8840, CONTROLSUITE, LVSERVOMTR

I'm looking to use the DRV8312 in my current project (we’re actually switching from the DRV8840 because the motor has changed to a BLDC).  The only eval kit I see for it also comes with a motor (DRV8312-C2-KIT).  Is there any other option?  I’d really prefer one without the added expense of a motor since we have plenty of motors lying around :)

Really all I’m looking for is to prove that this DRV8312 will be able to spin my motor in my application, and also take some measurements while it’s doing so.  So I just need an eval board that can operate a DRV8312 out of the box (no programming required, if possible) that I can hook up to a BLDC..

Thanks!

  • Hi Bill,

The DRV8312-C2-KIT is the only evaluation kit we have for the DRV8312 at the moment. The C2000 control card does come pre-flashed for sensorless BLDC motor control with GUI that should work for a wide range of motors.

What voltage/current range are you looking for? Do you prefer an integrated or gate driver + MOSFET solution? We may be able to recommend additional solutions as well.

  • Nick,

Do you have a program readily available that I can re-flash the C2000 so it does sensored control? Or does the DRV8312 eval kit only support sensorless control?

My motor runs on 36V, and will see typical rms currents of just under 2A, with peak rms current up to 3 or 3.5A. I plan to do cycle-by-cycle current monitoring as well. I very much prefer an integrated driver and FETs because the design needs to fit in the same board space allocated for the DRV8840 that it's replacing (we're changing from a brushed DC to a brushless DC motor).

    Thanks!

  • your kit is supported by a Hall sensor based project, yes:
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV8312-C2-KIT_v128\BLDC_Sensored
and a fixed embedded project GUI
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV8312-C2-KIT_v128\~GUI

this isn't something you just flash. you have to customize it for your motor.

there is also DRV8312-69M-KIT, but this just gives you a different controlCARD which enables InstaSPIN-FOC or InstaSPIN-MOTION. For MOTION it does use sensors, but only encoders (which the included motor doesn't use). We suggest LVSERVOMTR for evaluating InstaSPIN-MOTION on any DRV83x kit.
  • Thanks, Chris!  I'll look in to these once my eval kit arrives.

I have one more question about the DRV8312.  Rather than make a new post, I'll just ask here.  It doesn't look like this driver provides you direct control over both the high-side and low-side FETs, so I'm wondering what braking options are there?  I didn't see anything mentioned in the datasheet for braking.
