DRV8432 parallel mode inductors

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8701, DRV8701EVM

Hi, I'm designing a PMDC motor controller using the DRV8432 in parallel mode that handles a maximum continuous current of 9 A. The datasheet says that a 30 to 100 nH inductor is needed at the output of each half bridge to avoid any shoot through. Is there any sensible alternative to this requirement? Suitable inductors for this application are not cheap nor small.

  • Hi Gino,

Please note the bottom half of page 13 of the datasheet. Alternatives include a ferrite bead, and an equation for sizing the inductance is provided there.

Please take a look at the DRV8701 also. Assuming the voltage range is acceptable, this may be a better fit. The need for additional circuitry is removed, such as the inductors and possibly the heat sink. The DRV8701EVM is available for evaluation.
  • Hi Rick, thanks for the answer. I think the ferrite beads could do the trick, I'll see if I can find one that works for this design.
