Does DRV10983 has braking function?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10983

I am using DRV10983 demo board and the GUI to control a motor with disk load. Generally the demo board works well, but I want to know whether the DRV10983 can brake the motor with load rotating at high speed if I hope the motor to stop faster. I found that when I turn off the motor (set the motor speed to 0) when the motor is spinning, the motor current goes to 0 immediately, i.e., the controller will not apply power to the motor or absorb power from the motor. I also did not find any setting regarding brake on motor stop.

  • Hi Jinzhou,

Our experts have been notified and should reply soon.
  • We don't have brake for safety reason. If we turned brake which means turn on all three low sides on. The current through the low side FETs would be BEMF/Rdson which can be very high.

With DIR pin change, user can initiated the brake but it is not recommend unless user can guarantee that internal FETs are not exposures to abs max condition.

If the direction bit is changed, device will go to brake mode directly if the ISD is not enabled. device will stay in brake mode until the device speed less than BrkDone Threshold. In this path device will start again. Please refer to Figure 10 in spec.

Again , you have to be very careful to not to stress the internal FETs. If speed is very high and device has all three low side turned on. you will push BEMF/Rdson current among low side driver so you can potentially damage this device.
