DRV8803 : Thermal Protection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8803

To whom it may concern

Our customer has a question about thermal shutdown of DRV8803 as following.

1. Our customer think this device cannot shutdown each chanel individually. Is that correct?

2. How does this device detect temperature for thermal protection?
Does this device have thermal detection points each output FETs?

3. If this device had only one point of thermal detection point , please provide reference PCB design considering thermal detection point.

Competitor device has thermal detection points in each output FETs but DRV8803 looks like have only one point for thermal detection refered functional block diagram.

Your reply would be appreciated.
Thanks and best regards.

  • Hi Alpha,

    1. Our customer think this device cannot shutdown each chanel individually. Is that correct?

Yes, the device cannot shutdown each channel individually.

    2. How does this device detect temperature for thermal protection?
Does this device have thermal detection points each output FETs?

Thermal diodes (one or more) are placed throughout the silicon. When the temperature rises above the threshold, the outputs are disabled.

    3. If this device had only one point of thermal detection point , please provide reference PCB design considering thermal detection point.

The power pad is the key to minimizing thermal in this device. Please refer to the Heatsinking section for PCB recommendations. There are two application reports referenced: SLMA002 and SLMA004.
