DRV8308EVM not responding

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8308EVM, MSP430G2553

Received the DRV8308EVM kit. Can't make it work.

Using 24V, 150W power supply.

VM LED is glowing when 24v is present and the V3P3 LED is glowing when USB is connected.

Tried several computers: Windows XP, Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro.

Tried several versions of the Composer: v1.7.0.0, v1.8.0.1, v5.5.0.2, v6.0.0.0, v6.1.1.0.

On some computers the GUI is showing - Device: None, Com Port: COMX, Baud Rate: 9600, red error X-marks do not clear, buttons do not work.

On other computers the GUI is showing - Device: MSP430G2553, Com Port: COMX, Baud Rate: 9600. All errors clear, ENABLE button works, but has no effect on the ENABLE pin voltage ( 0v ). Reset button works as expected and is giving 3.3v on the ENABLE pin. PWM wheel keeps falling to 1% duty cycle.

I am running out of ideas at this point.

Is my board defective? Should I return it?

Thanks.

  • Sorry to hear you're having this problem.  You should only need to use the latest version of GUI Composer.

Regarding your computers that don't fully load the GUI with no red X's:  Please make sure to follow the installation instructions in Section 2.1 of the User's Guide.  The USB cable must be connected before starting the GUI.

Regarding your computers that do load the GUI and the red X's go away: unfortunately, incorrect MSP430 firmware was programmed to a batch of boards that were shipped, and you might have one.  It causes buttons like ENABLE to not work.  Please see this post, and let me know which default values you have for ADVANCE, SPEED, etc.

    Best regards,
    RE

  • Thanks for a quick reply!

Yes, I think my interface is indicating the wrong firmware version.
Now, as a newcomer to TI, I am not sure how to go about the updating the firmware of my controller.
Am I going to need any additional hardware?

    Thanks.

    Alex
  • If you have a MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad, you can reprogram the firmware. If not, no worries, we can exchange yours with one that has the right firmware. I need to track down how exactly to do that, and I'll let you know.

    Best regards,
    RE
  • As I do not own the LaunchPad and not yet familiar with firmware update procedures, the exchange would be the best option.
I will wait for your instructions.

Thanks a lot for your support.
