DRV10983EVM with unknown motor parameters and 12V application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10983EVM, USB2ANY, DRV10983, DRV11873

Hello Everyone,

I am using DRV10983EVM with USB2ANY and GUI. Motor parameters- 3-ph, BLDC, 12-V , 1 A, 25000 rpm(max speed), 1 pole pair.

I am trying to run the motor using the drv10983evm kit. First I followed the tuning guide to find out the motor parameters. Then I tried to start the motor, motor starts initially but immediately it stops after 2-3 seconds.  I tried to change the parameters and make the motor work but it fails every time.Have no idea where to debug. VCC provided to the kit 12 V.

Please Help.

  • Hi Pawan,

Our experts have been notified and should reply soon.
  • Hi Pawan,

DRV10983 has several lock detection mechanism and I am assuming on of the lock detect is getting triggered here and causing motor to restart.

Can you please check on 'Display tab' of GUI which 'Fault code' is displayed. One of the 5 LEDs will be turned 'ON' when motor stops, can you let us know which one is getting turned ON. Each LED corresponds on the lock detection shown on 'Advanced Settings' page.

Can you also share with us the Phase current plots when motor stops, it will help us analyze the problem and come with recommendation

    Regards,

    Krushal

  • Fault Code is "Zero"

Phase Current Plots are as follows:-(when motor stops)

  • Hello Krushal,
Can we add some delay between the lock detection mechanism? Like instead of lock detection acting immediately add some 3-5 sec delay and then lock detect occurs. Is there any way to do that.

    Thank You,
    Pawan
  • Hi Pawan,

What is scaling for phase current?

There is no mechanism to add delay to lock detection, but you can increase threshold of current by changing 'Lock Detection Current Threshold'

If you still encounter fault after increasing threshold for lock detection, decrease 'Acceleration current limit' on display page and decrease 'Phase to Phase Kt' value

What are the motor parameters - Kt and Resistance for this motor

Let me know how it works

    Regards,

    Krushal

  • Hello Krushal,

Sorry for late reply. Since there was no mechanism to add delay to lock detection, I had stopped working on the kit. But thank you for your help.

Can you suggest any kit like this with output current rating near about 5 A  for controlling of  sensorless BLDC motor?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Pawan,

Unfortunately we don't have any part with integrated solution for 5A current rating. There are many discrete solution available for 5A applications

Can you let me know what is purpose of adding delay to lock detection. If you can explain the application we may be able to figure out some setting to help achieve the target

    Regards,

    Krushal

  • Hi Krushal,
My application with BLDC has a varying load. So sometimes there is a inrush/over-current current, but the it is only for 2-3 seconds.

For example if the current limit is 1 A , & if load gets changed it will cross the limit say suppose 1-1.3 A, it may remain for 2-3 seconds, after that load drops down hence current will also drop down. But if the load is still there and current is above than the limit for more than 2-3 seconds then I want the motor to be turned off.

Actually first I tried with DRV11873, it shuts off the motor immediately if it detects the over-current, I don't want that. I need that if the over-current persist more than certain amount of time then and then it should shut off the motor.
  • Hi Pawan,

DRv10983 cannot change time of current threshold, but DRV10983 can limit current during acceleration, so it will make sure that current doesn't exceed certain threshold and overcurrent is not triggered.

Refer Section 9.4.6.1 Acceleration Current Limit section in datasheet and this parameter can be adjusted in GUI by changing 'Acceleration Current limit' on Basic setting page
Over current threshold can also be adjusted by changing 'Lock Detection Current Threshold' on Advanced setting page of GUI

  • Hi Krushal,
I was not able to configure the motor with DRV10983 EVM kit. There are too many parameters in it,I also followed what you told me.

And also I need a simple solution, because the motor I am using may change. If the motor is changed then I have to again reconfigure the parameters. And also you said that we cannot add the delay as well So I was looking for another IC.
