DRV8302 Heating Up

I have been working on BLDC motor driver. I'm currently using DRV8302 driver. I followed the Application schematic present in the datasheet. I also followed the layout guidelines for PCB design. The Problem is the device heats up if powered, plus no voltage occurs between buck converter (22uH buck inductor) and ground. I am unable to figure out the problem. Any help would be helpful.

P.S : The Power Pad of the IC is connected to ground.

Hi Imthiaz,

Thank you for letting us know about the power pad.

Does this occur on multiple boards?

How much current does the device consume when powered? What voltage is PVDD1 and PVDD2? Is it possible to separate the power (PVDD1 and PVDD2)? This will help determine if the bulk or the DRV8302 is consuming the current?

Do you have any traces under the device on the PCB?

I managed to make it work. I isolated the-the buck converter (removed feedback for Vsense pin). The Board is working perfectly. Thanks for the idea. :)

Hi Rick

I doubted that the problem with DRV8302 Heating up is mainly because of buck converter. I tried to remove/disable PVDD2, but I couldn't. In order to disable the buck converter, I removed Vsense resistor thereby making the potential of Vsense pin equals to zero. This solved by heating problem.

P.S: Currently using external voltage Regulator (TPS54360) for powering uC.
