DRV8301 Getting damaged during motor operation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8301

Hello,

We are doing Induction motor control opertion with following specs:

Input DC voltage: 48V

Motor : 3.5KW operarted at no load

PWM frequency : 20KHz

 Observation:

1. Gate driver gets hot when PWM input is given otherwise not

2. Buck converter still works

3. PWM output is not coming

4.Driver(TI DRV8301) has all its default settings.

We are not able to attach the schematic. Please give us a mail id.

  • Hi Vivek,

Before sending the schematic, what basic debug has been performed?

    Is the ground pad connected?

Have you tried sending the PWM signals through the device without the motor?

    Have you tried multiple boards?

Have you tried lowering the PVDD voltage to 12V? This may help with the debug?

    Any other debug performed?

Are you having problems attaching the schematic? If so, left click the "Use rich formatting" to the lower right of the reply text box. Once clicked, you can select the "Insert File" icon.

  • Hi Vivek,

The maximum input voltage of ADRV8301 is 60V. But the motor back EMF will induce much higher voltage. Usually, we have to choose devices having maximum rating up to 3 times the supply DC voltage. So, it would be much safer if you use a lower DC voltage, e.g. 18V*3 = 54V.
  • Hello Rick,

Thanks for your response. Below are the answers to your question :

    Is the ground pad connected?

    - Yes, buck converter is operating fine.

Have you tried sending the PWM signals through the device without the motor?

    - Yes we tried sending PWM signals without motor and it works.  After that we connect motor to the inverter. Motor runs for short time and stops (At this stage driver IC is not giving PWM signals.) We disconnected the motor and again tested but still PWMs are not coming out.

Have you tried lowering the PVDD voltage to 12V? This may help with the debug?

-No, We have tried reducing the input DC voltage till 24V.

    Any other debug performed?

-We have seen OCTW line goes low during the failure event.

I am not able to attache GUI with this too. Please let me know mail id.
