DRV8711 GUI not loading

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8711, DRV8880

Hi,

I'm fairly new to TI stuff and am trying to do a project for school. I'm currently experiencing troubles loading the GUI Composer for the DRV8711 (see below) :

I've followed the instructions from this post to get to this point: https://e2e.ti.com/support/applications/motor_drivers/f/38/t/373131

My only difference is my MSP430 seemed to be suspended for some reasons (I can't figure it out):

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using CCSv6.1 on Windows 7 Pro. Please let me know if there are other information I should provide.

  • Hi Vinh,

Have you run the GUI using the procedure in the User's Guide? This should confirm the hardware is operating correctly.

Are you modifying or debugging the code? If not, there is no reason to use the procedure in the post.

If you are modifying or debugging the code:

If the MSP430 is suspended as shown above, the GUI will show red x's indicating there is no connection.

Did you select Run at this point per the post. The status should change from Suspended to Running
  • Hi Rick,

I did follow the instructions given in the DRV8711 User's Guide. The reason I followed the procedures linked in the first post was because the UART connection was giving me an error. Therefore, I needed to change the COM port number in the Target Config of the DRV8711 project. Doing that allowed it to be compile and loaded properly.

I took your advice and press "Run" for the TI MSP430 USB1 and it is running as seen below:

However, my GUI composer is still showing Red X's.

  • Hi Vihn,

Now that the code is loaded in the MSP430 and running, please exit CCS and the GUI.

Next disconnect the USB port from the LaunchPad and re-connect it. This resets the MSP430. You probably don't need this step, but it is good to start from the beginning.
Then re-open the GUI. The GUI should find the MSP430 and the red x's should disappear. If they do not, please determine if the COM Port specified in the GUI is the LaunchPad com port. If it is not, use the COM Port pulldown menu to select the correct port.

Please let us know if this works.
  • Rick,

Thanks to your expertise, I've got the motor to spin with the default settings of the GUI. Where can I go to learn how to apply the specs of my motor into the GUI settings?

Here is the motor I'm currently using:

    http://www.omc-stepperonline.com/nema-820x28mm-18deg-02a-smallest-stepper-motor-8hs110204s-p-81.html

Thank you again for all your help so far!

  • Hi Vinh,

From the datasheet, see the document references below.

For related documentation see the following:
    • DRV8711 Decay Mode Setting Optimization, SLVA637
    • DRV8711 Quick Spin and Tuning Guide, SLVA632

The motor selected does not require the DRV8711, and could use a stepper motor driver like the DRV8880. This device has integrated FETs.
