Bldc motor kit DRV8312 and Piccolo MCU

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8312, MSP430G2553, CONTROLSUITE

Hello Everyone,

I want few information about DRV8312 kit.

1. How much easy is it to configure any motor with this kit.Is it just plug and play?

2.Is there any way to operate DRV8312 on this kit with another controller (MSP430G2553) instead of Piccolo?

3. Can we change the code in the Piccolo kit ? If yes, then if by mistake we mess up the code can we get the original code from somewhere, or can we revert back to the original code.

  • Hi Pawan,

    1) Which kit are you referring to? The DRV8312-69M-KIT or the DRV8312-C2-KIT?

    2) Maybe, but there could be limitations. The biggest limitation is access to the desired pins, and the controller used. There are test points available on connector J5. These could be used.

    3) Yes, The code is available via controlSUITE
  • Hi Rick,

    1) I dont see much difference between both the kits, although DRV8312-69M-KIT  have UART, SPI etc so I may prefer that, but which one is easier for a plug and play option. Can you tell me comparison between both the kits?

    2) Is there any Back EMF sensing in this chip? Since it needs feeding in the PWM signals, I need to have the feedback of either Back emf or speed. Or do the chip takes care of these feedback and the PWM we provide is just a kind of speed input like a analog input?

  • Hi Pawan,

The DRV8312-69M-KIT includes the InstaSPIN-Enabled Piccolo MCU, which allows " developers to quickly identify, automatically tune, and control a three phase motor, providing an 'instantly' stable and functional motor control system."

There is no back EMF sensing in the DRV8312. The BEMF can be sensed using external circuitry on the PCB. The phase currents can be sensed via the external circuitry on the PCB.
  • Hello Rick,

Thank for your help Rick. It was fast and to the point. Thank you once again.
