DRV8835 - PWM controlling the DC motor

Hello Team,

Please allow me to ask you a simple question. When driving the DC motor with PWM using in IN/IN mode, I believe you should control the motor repeating FORWARD and COAST, am I correct ? Or, would it be better to repeat FORWARD and BRAKE ?

Best Regards,

Kawai

  • Hi,

This will depend on the actual application.

The most common method for brushed DC motors is FORWARD/BRAKE. This will minimize the current ripple, but shorts the back-emf during the OFF period.

  • Hello Nicholas-san,

Thank you for your support. Customer will use DRV8835 for camera Pan and Tilt application. Which control method would be the recommendation, FORWARD/BRAKE or FORWARD/COAST ?

When PWM controlling with FORWARD/BRAKE, we are seeing large positive and negative current spikes. Is there a solution to reduce these current spikes ?

It would be helpful if you could allow us to discuss off line, so that I could share customer measurement data.

    Best Regards,

    Kawai
