DRV8816 continuous output current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8816, DRV8871, DRV8870, DRV8872

I am considering switching to your DRV8816 h-bridge device and I want to verify that they will comfortably (cooly) handle 1A continuous. The specs are 2.8 Peak and 2 RMS. Do you consider RMS to be continuous? Thanks!

  • Hi Craig,

The device can comfortably handle 1A continuous current, assuming proper heatsinking is provided through the thermal pad.

Yes, please consider RMS to be continuous.

FYI -- if you do not use VPROPI, the DRV8870, DRV8871, and DRV8872 may be of interest. These devices are much smaller, have lower Rdson and require fewer components. The DRV8871 has internal current sensing, which eliminates the need for the current sense resistor.
