DRV8301 Using diode between VM and PVDDD1 pin

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8301

Hi,

I have a question about diode for power supply reverse connection.

Please see the attached file.
My customer uses diode as attached file circuit.
Is it possble?
And Is OCP function circuit broken for this situation?

Best regards,
Shimizu

  • Hi Shimizu-san,

Does the customer have a reason to add the diode?

The OCP circuit may not work in all situations.
Example 1: VM voltage droops. If VM droops below PVDD, PVDD cannot follow VM because of the diode. This could cause false OCPs.
Example 2: Normal operation. The VDS sense circuit is comparing VM - Vdiode to the source voltage of the FET. The forward voltage of the diode may vary depending on the temperature and current.
  • Hi Rick-san,

    Thank you for your support.
The reason to add the diode is to prevent a breakdown of DRV8301 at reverse supply voltage connection.

    Best regards,
    Shimizu
