DRV 2605 Audio-to-Vibe support

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV2605

Hi, we're using several DRV2605 chips for a haptic feedback application. Is it possible to alter the behavior of a DRV2605 when it is in Audio to Vibe mode? We'd like to be able to pair audio for the user with the haptic feedback, and with our current setup of motors and no amplification, the required volume to get noticeable haptics is uncomfortably loud on most headphones. Is there any way to alter the sensitivity of the system over I2C?

If not, can any recommendations be made for a chip that can assist us in amplifying and filtering the incoming audio? We have heard of some amplifiers burning out the input pin, and want to make sure we're using a secure setup that will protect our chips.

Thanks,

Lucian

  • Hello Lucian,

I believe the answer to your question lies in section 7.5.8.2.4 of the datasheet:

To take advantage of the audio-to-vibe feature, connect the DRV2605 device to a line-out source as shown in Figure 55. The full-scale range of the IN/TRIG pin in the audio-to-vibe mode is 1.8 VPP. A 1-µF capacitor is recommended to AC couple the audio source and the IN/TRIG pin. For sources smaller than 1.8 VPP, the ATH_MAX_INPUT bit in register 0x13 can scale down the input range.

Try scaling down the input range by adjusting the ATH_MAX_INPUT bit. This can be done on the Haptics Control Console by going to Audio to Haptics in the Work Mode section and changing ATH_MaxInput, which is initially set to 1.8V.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

  • Thanks for the tip! I found that reducing the ATV minimum input level in register 0x12 also assisted in lower volume inputs.

    Thanks,
