DRV8835 Peak Current

The 1.5A peak can be almost continually if the thermal dissipation design is good enough and the device temperature can be within the operation range.

At least it can handle the motor startup or short time stall condition peak current with the ~ms to ~s level duration.

You should use device with current regulation and set the level between 2~3x normal current and stall current or MAX current of the device.

You mean the stall current is 2.1A in datasheet, I need to choose the peak current to 4.2A~6.3A?

Sorry, I mean there is no need to meet the stall current when choose the driver if the driver has the current regulation function like DRV8834, DRV8833. So for example the normal running current is 0.3A, stall current is 2A. We can set the current regulation/limit point at 3x about 0.9A(any level meets the startup torque with acceptable startup time will be fine). So the motor's current will never reach 2A anymore and we can choose device only with 1.5A MAX current.
