DRV10983 startup problem

Dear Sir,

I have one BLDC motor (Maxon EC motor 30W 404080).

This motor run few seconds and then stop when spin in open loop.

I have two questions.

1. Why motor stop during startup?

2. Does DRV10983 support maxon EC motor?

Maxon EC motor 30W 404080 motor parameter as below:

1. Nominal voltage: 24V

2. No load speed: 40700 rpm

3. No load current: 155mA

4. Nominal speed: 36300 rpm

5. Nominal current (max. continuous current): 1.7A

6. 1 pole pairs

7. 3 phase

8 Inductance phase to phase: 114uH

9. Resistance phase to phase: 1.53 Ohm

    Can you share waveform of phase current during open loop 

    Couple of recommendation on setting

    - Decrease open to close threshold

    - Since this motor is intended to spin at high speed, higher PWM frequency is desired. On Advanced setting page check box for  'Double the output PWM frequency'

    I reduce open to close threshold motor can startup.

    One thing i didn't understand, we follow turning guide to set threshold.

    Why can not start up smoothly?

    There are some phase current waveform for you reference.

    1. Open to close threshold is 204Hz.

    2. Open to closed threshold is 51Hz

    Zoom in 

    3. Maximum speed (41000RPM)

    The device is hitting over current limit in open loop if the threshold is too high. Can you try reducing the open loop current and check whether you can get higher threshold.

    Tuning guide provides guidance to tune motor but parameters needs to be optimized for every motor and applications.

    Did you try increasing PWM frequency ?

    I not sure your "reducing the open loop current" means change open loop current value on startup setting.

    If so, right now my setting is 0.4A and enable double output PWM frequency.

    I found if KT value setting higher will get high open loop current.

    There are some setting and waveform for you reference.

    Based on experiment, may i know high threshold or low threshold have any difference for motor performance?

    Do you have any comment for threshold setting?

     

    1. Open to closed threshold higher 179.2Hz motor will stop. Setting 166.4Hz motor can startup, but phase current still high.

    2. If kt is lower 29.3mV/HZ the open to closed loop threshold can set to 204.8Hz, but open loop current must be set 0.4A for lower phase current. 

    3. kt: 29.3, threshold: 204.8Hz, open loop current 0.2A. Motor will stop during startup.
