using BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM with TM4C123GH6PM and DC motor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM, DRV8871, DRV8870, DRV8872, DRV8305

Hello,

I want to know if these requirements are possible please:

1) is it possible to use the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM booster-pack with the TM4C123GXL launch pad?

2) Is it possible to connect one brushed DC motor like the one in the link below to the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM and control this motor by controlling two half bridges only instead of controlling the three half-bridges in case of brushless motors ?

Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you,

Ahmed Hossam

  • Hello Ahmed

Moving it to the Motor Drivers forum since almost all questions need to be answered by the DRV team

  • Hello Amit,

Thank you for your help, Looking forward to hearing from the DRV team.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Ahmed,

It is possible to use the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM with the TM4C123GXL. Firmware would have to be written to do so.

It is possible to connect one brushed motor as you described. A brushed motor driver with integrated FETs is typically used for a motor with less than 1A current. Examples of these motor drivers are the DRV8870, DRV8871, and DRV8872.
  • Hello Rick,

    Thank you for your answers!

Actually I'm intending to use the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM to drive 24v 4A rated brushed motor with a maximum of 10A stall current. From the datasheets and guides of the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM I can't see anything preventing the board from delivering this current to the motor. Do you agree with me that the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM can drive this motor without problems?

    Thank you,
    Ahmed Hossam
  • Hi Ahmed,

The BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM can drive the motor without problems.

What is the stall current of the motor? According to the specification provided, the motor run <200mA when loaded, but does not provide stall current.
  • Hello Rick,

I meant another motor which has a rated current of 4A and a stall of 10A. That's not the motor in the link in my first post. So the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM is supposed to run the 10A motor without problems as far as i understood from you, right?

I have another question please, why the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM schematic and PCB doesn't include a MOSFET Gate resistors? I read before that when using Gate drivers, we should provide gate resistors starting from 100 Ohm, is this right?

Thank you again for your great support!
  • Hi Ahmed,

Yes, the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM can run a 10A motor.

The DRV8305 has IDRIVE and TDRIVE, which limits the amount of current. For more information see the BLOG
