TPIC2050 Laser and Motor Drive Circuit Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPIC2050, TPIC2060A

1.  Can I write data with this LDD Driver Part?

2.  Is the Motor drive transconductance mode?  In other words, does the 12 bit DAC control represent tracking (or focus) coil current (mA) or coil voltage (V)?

  • Hi Ron,

We will contact the experts on this device and have them reply.
  • Ron,

I have seen the TPIC2060A used in Blu-ray recorders and the TPIC2050 used in Blu-ray players. Based on that, it looks like the TPIC2060A is best for writing data. Is your system for red laser or blue laser drives? I think the laser power requirements are different for red-ray and Blu-ray writing. Do you know the laser power requirements for writing Blu-ray disks, or the part number for the laser that is used? If you can send me those, I can verify if the TPIC2050 is a good fit.

The spindle motor uses a current-sense resistor and adjusts its output automatically based on internal algorithms. The other drivers adjust the PWM duty cycle based on the register value. So in that case, the DAC is controlling the coil voltage.
