What voltage are you using?

The DRV8840 might be a good choice, as it can provide 5A maximum and has current control available through the use of a reference voltage and sense resistor.

There are several other devices that might also work. May I suggest you look at the features of the DRV8840. We can discuss options based on how well the device fits your needs.

Supply is 13.8VDC. I will review the DRV8840.

I would like to control a solenoid using the current control function, also another mode using up to 10 kHz pwm on high-side, and another mode using pwm on low-side. Would the DRV8842 be better?

Hi Jeff,

The DRV8840 and DRV8842 are very similar. The difference is that DRV8840 has the ability to set both outputs in a high-Z state when PWM'ing.

When you are PWM'ing the high side, do you plan to toggle between OUT1 high/OUT2 low and OUT1 low/OUT2 low? If not what will you toggle between?

When you are PWM'ing the low side, do you plan to toggle between OUT1 high/OUT2 low and OUT1 high/OUT2 high? If not what will you toggle between?

The answer to the two questions above will probably point you to the DRV8842 or DRV8840.
