DRV8837 or DRV8838 Coast mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8838, DRV8837

Hello.

I'm planning to use the DRV8837 or DRV8838.

For this application I need to operate the motor and leave it "open" at the end of the travel.

This would be similar to leave open the motor circuit wires, to keep the shaft as free as possible.

The equivalent mode will be "coast", so I would put nSLEEP to 0 at that time... BUT would the DRV8837 or DRV8838 remain protected at this moment ?

When I apply manual force to the shaft and generate voltage between the motor wires, can I damage the DRV8837 or DRV8838 because the BEMF?

Thank you for your comments.

  • Hi Jasper,

The DRV8837 and DRV8838 will remain protected and in coast mode If you manually force the shaft, provide you do not violate any of the absolute maximums and minimums and keep the device in sleep mode or the outputs disabled when doing so.

If you allow the outputs to enable you may create a brake condition.
