Stepper motor driver IC Select

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8711, DRV8842

Hi team,

The customer needs to select the stepper motor driver IC to drive the unipolar and bipolar stepper motors  for the printer domain.

The power supply is 12Vor24V. The output current  is needed to reach 3A.

Can you recommend one or two suitable IC?

Best Wishes,

  • Hi Mickey,

Output current of 3A limits the options available. Please check if 2.5A will work.

What level of microstepping is desired? When using unipolar, what is the desired configuration to recirculate the current.

For unipolar, www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00872 shows the concept of configuring the DRV8711 to operate a unipolar stepper. Some of the protection features of the device had to be disabled to achieve this.

For bipolar, the DRV8711 with external FETs works. Also, two DRV8842 can be used to achieve 3A.

At 2.5A or below, additional options may become available.
  • Hi Rick,

Thank you for your reply. I will ask the customer what you asked.

Q1: But The max output current for DRV8711 is 400mA in the datasheet. It cannot achieve 2.5A or 3A. Can DRV8711  for unipolar and bipolar meet the customer's  requirement?

Q2: For DRV8842, the datasheet shows it has 3.5-A RMS output current. Why are two DRV8842 devices needed to achieve 3A. ?

  • Hi Mickey,

Q1: But The max output current for DRV8711 is 400mA in the datasheet. It cannot achieve 2.5A or 3A. Can DRV8711 for unipolar and bipolar meet the customer's requirement?

The max output current of the DRV8711 is set by the torque, gain, sense resistor, and external FETs. The DRV8711 can drive 10A or more.

Please note the configuration of a DRV8711 for unipolar and bipolar operation is different.

Q2: For DRV8842, the datasheet shows it has 3.5-A RMS output current. Why are two DRV8842 devices needed to achieve 3A. ?

A single DRV8842 can drive one winding of the stepper. Two are needed to drive both windings of the stepper.
