DRV8301: DRV8301 Fault Detection with limited IO

Part Number: DRV8301
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8305

Hello -

I am designing a custom controller pcb featuring the DRV8301.

I have a previous design using the DRV8305, and when a fault (including overcurrent reporting) occurs, the nFAULT pin is either pulsed (warning) or latched (shutdown). I see that on the DRV8301 there are two such pins - nFAULT and nOCTW.

I have limited IO available on my microcontroller - is it possible to combine these two pins so that they are both connected to a single trip zone input on my microcontroller? All I really need to know is that some fault occured - I can then easily read the SPI registers for details.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

  • Hi Asif,

Yes you can combine the nFAULT and nOCTW pins.

You can also combine the PWRGD.

Combining the PWRGD and nFAULT may limit the ability to determine the fault types. Buck output undervoltage and DVDD undervoltage would look like the same fault)
