DRV10963: using part to drive HDD platter motor

Part Number: DRV10963

I have the drv10963dsnr device that I want to use to control common hard drive platter bldc motors but I am having issues to get it to do anything. The motor specs are, Rm = 5ohms, Lm = 750uH but I do not know Kt  I am using the schematic on page 19 of the data sheet and applying a PWM signal of about 40kHz with a duty cycle range of 15% - 90%. I am missing something. I have attached some images. Sorry for the large image files.

    Hi,

    You might have to configure some of the register, can you please provide phase current waveforms ?

    Can you also download GUI www.ti.com/.../drv10963aevm and try to change some of the registers. Please follow EVM user guide www.ti.com/.../drv10963aevm for steps involved in changing register for DRV10963.

    Sorry for the late response. I checked the site for a couple of days and did not check again assuming I will get a notification when a response is posted. But I did not get any notification. Anyway, thank you for the response. I currently do not have the Evaluation Board. Do I need to have the board to change the configurations on the chip or is there another option to do it?

    Hello again Krushal,

    Not sure if you saw my previous post, but I have additional info and more questions. I do not know if I can get a current phase waveform for the setup I have here, however, I thought the waveform I have attached may provide a clue as to how I can make this work. Yellow is FG out triggering scope. Blue U phase voltage as connected to the motor. So, as you can see from the attached images the FG out signal seems to briefly turn low and permanently stays HIGH after about 1 second. The U phase signal magnitude is also only about 700mV as opposed to 5V that shows in the reference image(ref.png from data sheet). That signal also stays LOW  after about 1 second. BTW, my device is drv10963dsnr. It does not have a 'p' in the part #, nor does it have the 'j's. Do I have a programmable device. Also the OTP is programmed only once correct? How does it allow me to test different settings?

    Hello,

    You would need EVM for changing register settings.

    It seems like the scope has 10 x attenuation, the phase pin should be switching at applied voltage on VCC pin. Device is entering some kind of lock condition after 1 sec so its stopping to drive, I believe configuring register can resolve this problem.
    OTP can be programmed only once, you would need DRV10963P parts that has blank OTP( not any preprogrammed OTP).

    You are correct the scope was on 10x.  I am still not clear on the part I have. drv10963dsnr is it a part whose register values can be changed? Will I be able able to configure it if I get the EVM or do I have to get another part? So on these OTP parts, does it mean I have to get several parts and program them with different settings to find the correct setting for my motor and load conditions?

    Can someone please tell me what the register configuration settings of the device I have is? Supplier label says drv10963DSNR and the device is marked 10963B. I also need to know how many of the OTP devices (DRV10963PDSNR) I have to order to find the correct configuration settings for my application. HELP???

    Hello,

    Please follow the tuning guide www.ti.com/.../slau643.pdf, you would need only couple of devices since you can run motor using shadow register and once you are satisfied, OTP can be programmed.

    There are different flavors of DRV10963 also available with pre-programmed OTP.

    Thank you Krushal. That makes better sense. So it looks like the EVM allows me to test different settings without actually programming a device. However, I am still interested in knowing the setting values of the device I currently have. Can't you tell from the part # I gave you?

    Thank you. There was no mention of this version in the datasheet.
