DRV8829: DRV8829PWPR

Part Number: DRV8829

We are using DRV8829PWPR motor driver IC. Our motor current rating is 1.2A. can anyone please guide us that whether this IC be able to supply this current at 60C temperature. Can someone please guide that how to calculate the derating of one IC.

  • Hi Raj,

The IC should be able to drive 1.2A @ 60C. This assumes proper heatsinking, which is a good connection from the thermal pad to the PCB and a large copper plane to dissipate the power.

At 1.2A, the power through the device can be calculated using equation 3 of the datasheet. Using .32 Ohms as the high side + low side FET resistance, the power is .32 * 1.2 * 1.2 = .46W. A rough estimate is the junction temperature will increase 16C based on Ta + (Thetaja * Power)

More thermal information can be found at www.ti.com. There is a PCB thermal calculator available that includes the DRV8829.
