Sensor required for movement sensing in steppers

I have couple of stepper motors which i m using for X-Y stage movement of microscope stage ,can you suggest any rotary encoders which can be used for the movement control or movement tracking of the motors

If you're looking for a hall-effect kind of positioning, there is a blog post about determining the speed and direction of a multi-pole magnet on a motor.

In fact, there is a whole list of hall effect collateral and documentation on this FAQ in the hall sensors forum.
