DRV8301: Motorware does not start properly

Part Number: DRV8301
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORWARE

F28069M   C2000 Launchpad with DRV8301 motor controller.

When I start Motorware a window opens with one frame (no left sidebar) with a heading "TI Resource Explorer".  Nothing I've tried makes the screen look like what I see in tutorials and videos, a split window with a hierarchy in the left pane.

How do I get off of this dime?

  • Hi Gary,

We have contacted the Motorware experts for assistance.
  • Could you please have a more detail description on your question? Which lab projects or GUI are you using? Which step did you meet the question if you follow instaSPIN lab guide or GUI guide?
  • Thanks for replying, and for your help.  I followed the directions here,  and this You Tube video.

Aside:  a little while ago I started Code Composer Studio, and the Resource Explorer with a left-hand pane appears to be available there.   I don't know if that is a step in the right direction.   I have noticed that my LaunchPad, the F28069M does not show up in the CCS list of hardware.  I don't know what advantage would be gained if it were listed.  Given that it is not listed, I am *absolutely clueless* about what my next step should be from within CCS.

Do I want to be programming in CCS?   Does Motorware make programming easier?  Is Motorware an app that runs the motor itself?    I can find no answers to these very basic questions.

Backing up a little:  I have a brushless DC motor.  I want to use the TI hardware to spin in.  I've had the TI devices for many months, and I have spent HOURS trying to figure out how to use the LaunchPad/DRV8301 to operate the motor, or to program the devices so that it will control the motor.  I have gotten nowhere, and I really mean nowhere.

You can probably save us both a lot of effort if you can point me to the documentation that can get me started,  or example code.

Perhaps I asked the right question originally:   if I can get Motorware running,  should all my questions be answered by going through the Labs there?

  • It's better to download motorWare from TI website, and there are lot of lab projects to support F28069M Launchpad + boostxl8301 kit, you can follow the lab guide to play and run motor very quickly. The lab guide is instaspin_lab.pdf which is in \motorware_1_01_00_18\docs\labs. And you can find the corresponding lab projects in \motorware_1_01_00_18\sw\solutions\instaspin_foc\boards\boostxldrv8301_revB\f28x\f2806xF\projects\ccs for your kits in You can use CCS or InstaSPIN GUI to run the motor. Often, using CCS more easily.
  • Thanks very much.   I had  downloaded motorWare from just that site you linked to.  It wasn't working.   So I deleted motorWare, downloaded it again, and re-installed.  Aha.  Now it seems to work.  At least I can see the left pane.

But my frustration continues.  The first instruction in the first lab is  "... use the following menu selection:  Project -> Import Existing ..." .    Since I had just downloaded motorWare, I looked for that menu in motorWare, but of course it isn't there.   After a while I looked in CCS, and there it is.   But the instructions do not tell me that I should be looking in CCS.

The next step is to import the labs.   I go through the instructions, and I see them being "imported"  (progress bar). I did not import them into my workspace.  But now where are they?  They are not visible in the left pane of CCS.  Where have they been imported to?

  • Project Explorer!!

The instructions do not say: "To access the labs, use the following menu selection: View -> Project Explorer". I had to hunt and peck to find this.
  • Hi,

I had the same issue and managed to uninstall and reinstall motorware again to see the left pane as shown in tutorials.
