DRV8842: How to select decay mode?

Part Number: DRV8842

Hi,

In datasheet of DRV8842, there are three decay modes: fast decay, slow decay and mixed decay. I have quesitons need your help as follows:

1. Does "decay" represent the decay of motor's current when PWM signal is low level?

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of three modes?

3. How to select decay mode based on specific application?

I am waitting your answers, thank you!

  • Hi Shaw,

    1) Decay represents the mode used when current regulation is entered. Please see section 7.3.3 of the datasheet.

    2) Please see www.ti.com/.../slva500.pdf for more details.

    3) In most brushed dc applications, slow decay is chosen. In stepper motor applications, slow when the absolute value of the current is increasing, and mixed or fast when the absolute value of the current is decreasing is typically chosen.
