DRV8825: About configuration of decay mode

Part Number: DRV8825
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8711, DRV8884, DRV8880

Hello,

Regarding to decay mode on DRV8825, my customer is asking some question.

They will configure these mode depending on motor current.

(Question)

(1) Do you have something recommend configuration as first step guide?

For example, Is following document(for DRV8711) available for decay mode of DRV8825?

http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva637/slva637.pdf

(2) In case of Full step , 1/2 step and 1/4 step, how should they consider decay mode on these mode?

  • Hi Tao_2199,

Decay settings depend on system voltage, motor specifications and motor speed. At best, we can recommend some starting points. It will be up to the customer to determine the best setting based on the application.

FYI -- The newer DRV8880 and DRV8884/5/6 have additional decay modes that will typically reduce the current ripple more than the DRV8825.

    >> Mixed decay is a good starting point. If the current waveform looks good, switch to slow and try again. If there are issues with the waveform, try fast decay.

    (2) In case of Full step , 1/2 step and 1/4 step, how should they consider decay mode on these mode?

    Same recommendation as above.
