DRV8886: What is allowance of external capacitor value of AVDD and DVDD?

Part Number: DRV8886

 Hello guys,

One of my customers is evaluating DRV8886 for their new products. In the evaluation, they had the following questions. Could you please give me your comments?

Q1. On pin function table in the device datasheet(SLVSDA4), 0.47uF ceramic capacitor should be placed between DVDD and GND, AVDD and GND. What is allowance of this capacitor? Can 1uF be used?

Q2. Can M0,M1,TRQ pin be often changed during powered on? Is there any timing which those pins levei must not be changed?

Q3. In their evaluation. the squeal of motor is large. So they will try to use slow decay mode. When slow decay mode is used, is there any point to make note for slow decay using?

 Your comments would be appreciated.

 Best regards,

 Kazuya Nakai.

  • Hi Nakai-san,

Q1. On pin function table in the device datasheet(SLVSDA4), 0.47uF ceramic capacitor should be placed between DVDD and GND, AVDD and GND. What is allowance of this capacitor? Can 1uF be used?

We will investigate and reply in a few days.

Q2. Can M0,M1,TRQ pin be often changed during powered on? Is there any timing which those pins levei must not be changed?

M0 and M1 changes are accepted when the STEP signal rises. TRQ can be changed at any time.

Q3. In their evaluation. the squeal of motor is large. So they will try to use slow decay mode. When slow decay mode is used, is there any point to make note for slow decay using?

Slow decay may not work at slow speeds. Be sure to monitor the current waveforms at all speeds.
  • Hello Rick,

Thank you very much for your reply. Did you get any information about the capacitor value range? Our customer wants to know it ASAP.

    Best regards,
    Kazuya Nakai.
  • Hi Nakai-san,

Thank you for reminding me. The designer ran some simulations and found 1uF can be used.
  • Hi Rick,

Thank you very much for the simulation.

I will inform our customer that 1uF can be used for DRV8886.

Thank you again and best regards,
    Kazuya Nakai.
