DRV8837: DRV8837 OCP Question

Part Number: DRV8837

Hi team,

Our customer test DRV8837 by increased load current, they find DRV8837 start to protection at 2.3A (temperature around 130deg ~ 150deg).

Customer's question are :

1. is protection caused by OCP or TSD?

2. From datashet, DRV8837 Overcurrent protection trip level is from 1.9A ~ 3.5A. the range is huge, is it possible change currnt protection level through HW or FW?

Thanks & Regards

Eddie Chou

  • Hi Eddie,

    Customer's question are :

    1. is protection caused by OCP or TSD?

    >> If the outputs disable and re-enable in approximately 1ms, it is OCP. If the time between disable and re-enable is much longer, it is TSD.

    2. From datashet, DRV8837 Overcurrent protection trip level is from 1.9A ~ 3.5A. the range is huge, is it possible change currnt protection level through HW or FW?

    >> It is not possible to change.

  • Hi Duncan,
Thanks, is that means DRV8837 current protection range tolerance is from 1.9A ~ 3.5A and customer not able to change.
So it may happen with some devices driving current over 3A but DRV8837 still not protection, right?
    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi Eddie,

Correct, the OCP limit can vary from device to device.
