DRV8873S-Q1EVM: External PWM drive without SPI

Part Number: DRV8873S-Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8873,

Hi team,

I'm interested in the hardware setup version of DRV8873.

I will basically use it with a simple configuration that does not have an SPI interface.

It seems that SPI type evaluation board can be purchased, so I'd like to use it.

Can I use this evaluation board without SPI?

The our usage is in PWM mode and the peak current is up to 3A.

I think that slew rate etc can be adjusted by SPI, but first I think that it is possible to turn the motor with external PWM.

Can it be driven with external PWM with default register setting?

Is SPI communication necessary to make it work in the first place?

Best regards,

Tomoaki Yoshida

  • Hi Yoshida-san,

The DRV8873S-Q1EVM can be used without the SPI if the default values are acceptable.

The SPI version allows evaluation of all settings of the device, without changing resistors at the inputs. It is recommended to use the SPI version to determine the settings.

    >> Yes, it can. The device will be in PWM mode by default.

  • Hi Rick-san,

    Thank you for your support.

I understand that the EVM can be used without SPI.

We will not connect to PC by USB.

How should the resistors from R23 to 34 on the evaluation board then be handled?

Should I remove all of them?

I will set nSLEEP and DISABLE using jumper J4, and I input PWM from the outside to EN/IN1 and PH/IN2 as well.

    Best regards,

    Tomoaki Yoshida

  • Hi Yoshida-san,

Yes, please remove resistors R23 to R34.

  • Hi Rick-san,

    Thank you for your support.

I will evaluate DRV8873 with evaluation board.

How should I handle the SDI, SCLK and nSCS pins?

Should be pulled down to GND?

Because I can't get schematics of DRV8873S-Q1EVM, I don't know how to be connected to input pins.

I think that it isn't supplied 3.3V to DVDD pin, if R23 is removed.

    Is it right?

    Best regards,

    Tomoaki Yoshida

  • Hi Yoshida-san,

Sorry for the delayed response. We will provide additional information directly.
