DRV8323: current protection for DRV8323

Part Number: DRV8323

Hi,

There are two ways of current sensing can be used for DRV8323, VDS sensing and shunt resistor.

Waht is the mainly difference between these two protection and can we use only one current sense.

From my understanding, both should be need since VDS sensing is mainly for the protection with fast response but not so precision,

the shunt resistor doesn't respose fast but is more accuracy that can be used for curent feedback control

Please let me know if there are comments form your side.

thanks for your help.

  • Gary,

Your understanding is correct. I have a couple clarifying points:

    • The VDS sensing is a protection feature which will also detect shorts from the supply rail and ground on the switching nodes.
    • The shunt resistor+amplifiers are meant to limit the current to a particular value depending on mechanical load conditions on the motor.
