DRV8880: Check output specification

Part Number: DRV8880
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8825, , DRV8886AT, DRV8881, DRV8818

Hello
My client is considering motor drives for 2.5A output.
Is it possible to drive 2.5A like DRV8825 with DRV8880?
2.5A can be driven, can you recommend additional products (including auto turn function)

Is it possible to implement a 2.5A output with the DRV8886A?
Please also explain TRQ PIN function

  • Hello KIM Andy,

I have tried to drive 2.5 A using the DRV8880 an DRV8886AT on the bench. Unfortunately, the device goes into overtemperature shutdown when I do that. I don't recommend using those devices for that current. The DRV8881 has AutoTune and can support 2.5 A.

The TRQ pin just scales the full-scale current by a percentage. Sometimes customers can use this to reduce the current consumption of the driver if they know they don't need the full torque capability of their stepper.
  • Hello KIM Andy,

I spoke with a coworker about your question. The DRV8880 and DRV8881 are similar devices. The main difference is the interface. You may be able to push the limits of these devices to operate at 2.5 A, but the Recommended Operating Conditions for both devices are 1.4 A RMS (or 2 A peak). The DRV8818 and DRV8825 would be better for your desired current level, but they don't have AutoTune.
