DRV8301: Gate Drive

Part Number: DRV8301

If the 30ma is not enough to drive the mosfet gate how would you have the DRV8301 drive an intermediary gate drive IC?

Thanks

  • Hi Jim,

This may be possible, but generally requires some thought regarding how the protection circuitry is affected. Also, use of 100% duty cycle may no longer be available.

An example of how this could be done is www.ti.com/.../TIDA-01227

This reference design is for a stepper motor, but the concepts are similar. The DRV8301 may have to operate at a lower voltage to send the proper signals to the intermediary gate drive. If so, the overcurrent protection via the VDS monitoring will be disabled because the DRV8301 cannot monitor the drain to source voltage.
  • Hi Jim,

The value "30 mA" in the datasheet is the average gate current. The DRV8301 can provide peak drive currents up to 1.7 A. This is selectable by Register 0x02. Is that enough current for your MOSFETs?
