DRV8814: Bulk capacitors

Hi,

I could not determine what value of bulk capacitors should I use. 

I am going to use the Mabuchi RS-385PH-10280 motor.

    Hello Menahem,

    Our DRV8814 Evaluation Module uses 100 uF. This should be sufficient for most applications. It's difficult to give a generic recommendation because bulk capacitor sizing is affected by a variety of things:

    • Type of power supply
    • Acceptable supply voltage ripple
    • Parasitic inductance in the power supply wiring
    • Type of motor (brushed DC, brushless DC, stepper)
    • Motor start-up current
    • Motor braking method

    You may be able to use a smaller bulk capacitor in your application. I recommend testing different values on a prototype board and choosing a value sufficient to supply the required current without the DRV8814 supply rail collapsing or having large ripple.
