DRV8704EVM: Does DRV8704EVM can work with 24V, 30A motor?

Part Number: DRV8704EVM

Hello,

I want to buy DRV8704EVM  to control DC motor 24V, 30A with Peak Motor Current 80A.
Have you tested the board with the motor with working current like that?

I read spec of Mofet in the DRV8704EVM  and it can work.

But the DRV8704EVM  doesn't have heatsink or some thing like that, does it can work with 24V 80A without heatsink? If not which heatsink you recommend in this case?

Thanks

  • Truong Giang,

I don’t think DRV8704EVM can support 30V 80A operation without a heatsink for long time. All Power FETs are on top layer and the themal pads are soldered on the board. That limits the heatsink location: only on the top.

If we have to add a heatsink on the EVM, I would think you have to customize a special heatsink to fit the EVM layout.

But the EVM can help you check the power dissipation with a low current condition. And then, you can estimate the power loss with 80A to help you select heatsink.

Or, you can modify TO220 package FET to  the EVM FET footprint and add a standard heatsink on TO220 package FET.

  • Hi Truong.

In addition to Wang's comments, please note the EVM has other limitations such as the 16A rating of the connectors and the 4W limit of the sense resistor.

Also there is no thermal protection for the FETs.

The DRV8704EVM should be limited to 16A peak to remain within the component ratings.
