DRV10983: Direction of spins by external torque

Guru 16770 points

Hi

Our customer wants to implement circuit that can detect direction of motor which is spun by external torque.

I think it is possible to determine by monitoring phase of two different FG signal.

However, I have no such a reference.

Do you have any reference or other solution?

  • Hey na na78,

When you say "Detect direction of motor which is spun by external torque" I assume you are talking about detecting the direction of a rotor spinning when the motor drive is in an idle state, correct? To reiterate, I assume the use case is that some external force is causing the rotor to spin, the customer would like to turn the device on and start the motor, but in order to do that, some external circuitry needs to figure out which way the motor spinning.

When you are talking about FG, I also assume that you are referring to a frequency generated trace on the board and not the FG pin of our device. I would recommend the trace or some hall sensors to check actual position of the motor. Our device may be able to use ISD to solve the problem but I need to understand problem and the end goal of this exercise.

    Best,
