DRV10983-Q1: considering parts DRV10983Z, but max junction temperature is 150'C,

Part Number: DRV10983-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10974, DRV10983,

What does TI recommend for three phase brushless dc motors above 125'C to maximum of 150'C(operational)?

considering parts DRV10974 but this is 125'C max

considering parts DRV10983Z, but max junction temperature is 150'C, this is for a one off deployment application, so we do not want operation inhibited by the device?

Can TI advise me of suitable device that does not have temperature shutdown, but i can see in most applications you want this, can this be disabled, maybe?

Thanks in advance, for your support.

Regards

Victor

  • Hey Victor,

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble understanding what your questions are. Let me try to explain how to interpret the datasheet and see if we're having a misunderstanding.

Absolute max vs. recommended operating conditions:

All TI datasheets show a table for absolute maximum ratings and recommended operating conditions. It is understood that any conditions over the absolute max ratings have a high probability to damage the part. In addition, all of the electrical characteristics are tested or validated within the recommend operating conditions. This means, conditions that in between the recommended operating conditions and the absolute maximum ratings are not tested or validated (unless noted otherwise in the electrical characteristics table).

With this said, I will post the abs. max temperatures, max operating temperatures, and thermal shutdown specs for the DRV10974, DRV10983, and DRV10983-Q1 (all different devices):

    1. Abs. Max Junction Temperature (TJ)
      1. DRV10983: 150C
      2. DRV10983-Q1: 150C
      3. DRV10974: 150C
    2. Typical Thermal Shutdown spec (TSDN)
      1. DRV10983: 150C
      2. DRV10983-Q1: 165C
      3. DRV10974: 150C
    3. Max recommended operating ambient temperature (TA)
      1. DRV10983: NA
      2. DRV10983-Q1: 125C
      3. DRV10974: 85C
    4. Max recommended operating junction temperature (TJ)
      1. DRV10983: 125C
      2. DRV10983-Q1: NA
      3. DRV10974: 125C

In addition, we know TJ>TA will always be true.

    Comments:

It sounds like you would like to a device that will operate up TJ = 150C. According to specs above, all of our devices can operate up to 150C. However, none of these devices fall within the "Recommend Operating Conditions". As mentioned above, this means you have the ability to use devices in this condition but the electrical characteristics table was not tested in this range. If you agree to test the devices in this range, then I suggest heavily testing for robustness of the system.

If I were to recommend a device that will give you the highest chance of success, I suggest the DRV10983-Q1 because it is at least qualified for TA=125C and the thermal shutdown protection is a bit higher than 150C.

Generally speaking, it sounds like you're looking for a device that is Grade 0, automotive qualified. Unfortunately, we do not have any Grade 0 integrated motor drivers that are qualified at this level.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,

    -Cole
