Does the TI DRV8813 need external recirculation diodes on the outputs?

Is there any downside to having external recirculation diodes ?

Hi Gregg,

There is generally no need or downside for external recirculation diodes.

If external schottky diodes are used, power can be reduced when recirculation occurs due to the lower forward voltage.

thanks Rick. Is there a TI document that explains how the DRV8813 handles recirculation without external diodes?

Hi Gregg,

The DRV8813 has internal diodes per Figure 6 of the datasheet.

The internal diodes are used during the dead time when the outputs are transitioning from high to low or low to high, and in the case of an overcurrent or overtemperature when the FETs are disabled . This is referred to as asynchronous decay.

Most of the time the current is flowing through the FETs. This is referred to as synchronous decay.
