DRV8306: Simplified BLDC motor control

Part Number: DRV8306

Dear all.

I have a question about the simple BLDC motor system, such as DRV8306.
If you look at the documents in the SLVA980A, they are described by the Traditional BLDC system and the Simplified system.
In this case, we would like to ask you which application is limited in performance or performance difference if it is applicable to any BLDC application, even though it seems simple control.

Thanks.

  • Mike,

I think I can summarize your question into systems that use 1X PWM and those that use 6x PWM.

1X PWM offers the least complex control circuity as only one PWM signal is needed. This allows the MCU to be very simple while leaving the commutation and protection features to the motor driver. This is where our smart gate drivers are helpful. The drawback of this is that if the customer wants to customize the commutation then they cannot use 1X PWM mode.

6X PWM offers the most flexibility as each of the inputs and outputs can be controlled independently. A more complex MCU is needed but this also allows for more customized control and algorithms.
