SN754410: Can I use for new design

Part Number: SN754410
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8844, DRV8802, , DRV8871, DRV8870, DRV8872, L293, DRV8876, L293D, DRV8816

Hello,

I have a question regarding the quadruple half-H driver SN754410.
I have looked that this driver is old but it is active again.

Do you suggest me to use it inside a new project under development now?
This project will have a 10 years life time.

Can you please suggest me some alternative components?

I wait your reply.
Thank you very much for your support.

Best Regards
Ramakrishna

  • Hi Ramakrishna,

If you are starting a new project, we will be happy to guide you to a newer device. The benefit of the newer devices is the lower RDSon that will improve the overall efficiency of the system.

If you provide your system voltage, application, and current needs, we can provide recommendations. Example devices are the DRV8844 and DRV8802.

The SN754410 is available now and recommended for new designs. It is up to you to decide if you want to use it or move to a newer device.

The SN754410 current status is active:
ACTIVE: Product device recommended for new designs.

If over time, the product will be discontinued, the status will be changed to LIFEBUY.
LIFEBUY: TI has announced that the device will be discontinued, and a lifetime-buy period is in effect
  • Rick,

    Below is the requirement.

For this one, I have been chosen SN754410. Because input logic voltage (VCC1) is 5V and output  drive voltage (VCC2) is 15V.

It has thermal protection. If I do STG or STB (to 32V)  , then it will go to thermal protection if temperature goes above 150 C. Then output will be high impedance state. Once cool down it will give the voltage according to input.

Do you have any other devices to satisfy these requirements.

    Thanks

    Regards

    Ramakrishna

  • Hi Ramakrishna,

The DRV8870, DRV8871, or DRV8872 may be a good choice if you only need 1 H bridge.

These devices have additional protection features like overcurrent, undervoltage and overtemperature.
  • Rick,

Do you have any half H -Bridge drivers other than SN75410?

    Thanks

    Regards

  • Hi Ramakrishna,

There are several devices, but it comes down to specifications, features, and price.

The L293 appears to be a pin to pin compatible device. The LN293D is a lower current version.

The DRV8844 contains 4 half bridges, and the outputs can be connected in parallel for more current.

The DRV8876 is also an option, but this depends on your schedule. The device has not been released, but is available for sampling.
  • Hi Rick,

    SN754410(-40 to 85 C) and L293 ( 0 to 70 C) are not in our temperature range. I did not get LN293D datasheet.
I think these devices (DRV8844, DRV8876 , DRV8870, DRV8871 and DRV8872) can not use as single half H-bridge for getting all protection features. Please can you provide your views for using these devices as single half H-Bridge.

We want very small footprint and low cost also.
We need 8 half H-Bridge per board.
    Requirements:
    Application: I/O protection.
    Maximum Current : 50 mA
    Maximum Voltage : 32

DRV8871 is SO-8 package and has ambient temperature of -40 to 125 C but can not use as single half Bridge for getting all benefits. Please can you confirm?

    Thanks

  • Hi Ramakrishna,

    Thanks for the additional information.

I would recommend you stay with the SN754410 based on your requirements. You are already familiar with the device and its operation.

To follow up on your comments:
The L293D is a lower current version of the L293. The L293 datasheet has information for both. As you noticed, the L293 operating temperature is lower.

Our newer devices include undervoltage protection, thermal shutdown, and overcurrent protection which protects against short to battery and short to gnd. But the cost is not as attractive.

If price is the main priority, 2x SN754410 is the choice.
If very small footprint is the priority, 4x DRV8816 may be the choice. The package area of 4x DRV8816 is ~45% of 2x SN754410.
