BOOSTXL-DRV8320S: Is it "normal" that a DRV8320H chip is soldered on a BOOSTXL-DRV8320S board?

Part Number: BOOSTXL-DRV8320S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8320, DRV832X

Hello!

I've ordered 3x "BOOSTXL-DRV8320S" from Mouser, and (after the issues written below) 2x "BOOSTXL-DRV8320S" from DigiKey.

- All packages contain a valid DRV8320S label on the outside, and all seals were/are okay.

- I opened two of them for evaluation.

- As the SPI connection "didn't work" (no data transfer from DRV back to µC), we looked over code, investigated conections, etc.

- Finally we looked at chip markings on the eval-board and we've seen "DRV8320H" on the boards - therefore no communication.

My questions are now:

- Is there always a "H" chip version on the boards (for both BOOSTXL-DRV8320S and H)?

- Should I solder the "S" chip version onto the boards?

- Should I notify Mouser and DigiKey for sending me the wrong boards? The labels are okay, they say "DRV8320S" but the chip is "DRV8320H". I doubt a bit that both of them giving out wrong boards - independently from each other. That's the reason I ordered the second two of them from DigiKey, just to be sure...

PS: If this is "normal" I would like to know which spec/datasheet I should read, e.g. where is this documented. I've read multiple times the manual of DRV832x and BOOSTXL manuals (both H and S, seems they are the same), but I must have missed this then.

Thank you in advance for trying to answer my questions,

kind ragards,

Stefan Schmid

  • Stefan,

Sorry to hear about the confusion.

Please check the sticker on the back of the BOOSTXL-DRV8320S board. It will tell you for sure what the board was tested as.

I myself have a board here as well that has the device mark of "H" on the IC yet it is an S board as marked on the back sticker and everything works as expected via SPI.

I am double checking with my EVM production people but I think the H marking was the same on the S and H devices from early EVM units.

Did you flash the MSP430 board with the code composer project before trying it with the GUI?

    Regards,

    -Adam
  • Hello Adam,

thanks for your reply. My eval board says:

    - White silk on the board: "BOOSTXL-DRV8320XEVM MDBU020 A"

    - Sticker on boards backside: "BOOSTXL-DRV8320S"

    - Sticker on boards backside "4873400032"

    - Chip marking is: "DRV8320H TI 6BI C4T2 G4" (the "G4" is underlined, see picture)

At the moment I have no MSP430 LaunchPad board at hand (but soon), so I will test that then, and reply here when done.

    To be clear:

    - The chip marking is just wrong on early BOOSTXL-DRV8320S boards, I should not trust on it.

    - I should trust only on the white label on PCB backside.

    Is that correct?

    Regards,

    Stefan

  • Stefan,

Yes that is right, please make another post when you receive the MSP430 and try it out.

    Regards,
