Motor Driver for line follower robot

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8848, DRV8847, DRV8848EVM

Hi All

Currently I am using TB6612FNG Motor Driver for my commercial project (Line follower robot) .It has two motors

All power consumption below 10W

I need little higher performance  Motor Driver better that TB6612FNG

The size of the motor driver should almost same as TB6612FNG

Motor Specification

No-load speed @ 12V: 650 rpm

No-load current @ 12V: 0.06 A

Stall current @ 12V: 0.75 A

Max output power @ 12V: 1.1 W

Note

Also I suppose to use 6v motors  with project

Please advice

Thanks in advanced

  • Hi PA3040,

Please look at the DRV8848, DRV8881E or DRV8881P. Both have similar current specifications, but the DRV8881E and DRV8881P can operate at higher voltages.
  • Hi Rick Duncan

I think peak current maybe less .I would be grate if I have a option  ?

  • Hi PA3040,

Most of the devices have higher peak currents.

I neglected to point out the DRV8847 is also an option.

"I need little higher performance Motor Driver better that TB6612FNG" What higher performance do you need?
  • Hi Rick Duncan.... Have a nice day
Higher performance mean better than TB6612FNG . I compared both DRV8847 and DRV8848 and could not found the major different. I am sorry to ask this ,,,,what is the advantage that have DRV8847 and DRV8848 comparing with TB6612FNG
  • Hi PA3040,

Sorry, but "Better than TB6612FNG" is not clear.
    Do you want higher voltage?
    Do you want higher current?
Do you want higher input frequency?
    Something else?

The DRV8847 and DRV8848 has a higher voltage rating, a higher current rating, and similar input frequency. The DRV8847 and DRV8848 also has overcurrent protection in the case of a short circuit.
  • Hi Rick
Higher Current is the most impotent
In additional I have bad experience with TB6612FNG placing bulk capacitor and so many design has failed with TB6612FNG placing , sizing , distance of bulk capacitor . Motor braking is very reliable using PMW EnableA and EnableB with TB6612FNG than PWM method with input pins . How about DRV8848 . Is there any factors to be considered about value and size of Motor by pass capacitor.

This post stated asking about line follower robot but I have designed a Motor driver PCB which also used TB6612FNG . We have a plan to transfer to DRV8848 but only issue is this motor driver used 13GA motor that is higher specification than 20n motor

    In additional
Generally our all PCB are fabricated by China. At the same time we purchased SMDs in China that will help to reduce the shipping cost . Is there any location or distributor to buy TI parts around shenzhen China

    Thanks in advanced

  • Hi PA3040,

    Thank you for the clarifications.

The DRV8848 can handle more continuous current due to a different package. The DRV8848 can limit the current through the motor automatically by setting the VREF voltage. The DRV8848 also has 5V of margin due to a higher absolute maximum.
The TB6612FNG can handle more peak current due to a lower Rdson.

The DRV8848 has a similar control table as the TB6512FNG, but requires the PWM signal to move from xIN1 to xIN2 when PWMing. By PWMing xIN1 and xIN2, motor braking should be similar. Please refer to Table 1 for details.

Bulk and local filter capacitors should be placed near the DRV8848.

There is a DRV8848EVM available for evaluation of the device.

Yes, there are distributors throughout the world. Please see the link: www.ti.com/.../distributors.html for information.
