Hello guys,

I have a motor whose parameters are described in the attached picture. The motor phase to phase resistance is 60.2OHM which after dividing with 2 will be 30.1 for phase resistance according to the tunning guide. Now my question is " can I run this motor with DRV10983Q1EVM or DRV10983Q1 Chip or not? "Is there any way to run this motor because I already designed my board with DRV1093Q1. I also have DRV10983Q1EVM board for testing purposes. Thanks

Unfortunately according to Table 36. Recommended Application Range in the datasheet, the maximum recommended phase to center tap resistance is 19 ohms. Above that might trigger the no-motor fault since the resistance is too high. Let me talk to my teammates to see if we can recommend an alternative solution

Thanks alot . I really need an alternative solution which resemble with DRV10983Q1. I really appreciate your help. I was working on this project from last 4 months and if i can't make it. The whole progress will be ruined. Thanks again .

Did you try spinning the motor with the DRV10983-q1 evm? I would do that first to see if the chip can spin the motor. Set the resistance setting to the max (around 18 ohms I think).

Unfortunately, I can't because of that I have to buy motors. Actually, I already have a system which is running on these motors and Faulherb SC1801S motor driver is used for that system. Now I want to shift that system to TI drivers and for that, I did research and worked from the past 4 months. I designed my own board with DRV10983Q1 chips but I forgot to consider all these parameters which you can say is my mistake or people usually do when they do new things. Now I have only DRV10983Q1 or similar chips for all this project. If it does not work then I should not waste more money to buy motors.

If you suggest then i can do that too but there is no other way for my issue?

We do not have any other pin to pin compatible integrated parts that we can say with confidence can drive that high resistance motor. Only parts that can drive higher resistance are DRV8x parts that have the gate driver and fets separate from an MCU instead of all being in one chip. Is there an option of changing the motor to something with less resistance?

I am afraid no. We can not change the motor. It will create more complexities. My aim is to change the driver only with something from TI.

1) I would suggest to go through our TI products page and see a driver solution that fits your need. www.ti.com/.../products.html

2)I need the following info to recommend a solution:
a) Does this part have to be ab automotive part?
b) Is it 12V Vcc?
c) Max peak phase current to drive motor
d) Does the motor have hall sensors? From the datasheet picture you attached, i see a row for hall sensors, but I need you to confirm if there are hall sensors in the motor

No, it is not relative to any Automotive Vehicle. I just want to drive a pump with these motors
Yes it is 12V VCC
I am attaching datasheet for that. Just look at 012B
NO, this motor does not have any Hall sensor because it is a customized version and it is sensorless Brushless DC motor. You can ignore the Hall sensor part in Datasheet for that.

I attached the datasheet of the driver (SC1801S Faulhaber) which are using with the motor. Both driver and motor are from Faulhaber. Maybe it can help you to suggest some device for me. I want to shift my system from Faulhaber to TI. Thanks again for your precious time.

Ali,

Have you seen the DRV8320? This device is recommended for 12V up to 36V systems and can be run as sensorless trapezoidal. A simple EVM is available and could be used to start evaluation of the system.

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me what is the trapezoidal mode? As you can see, I am facing the problem with the drv10983 about the resistance. Now if I design a new system with DRV8320 then will it work?

Ali,

I suggest you to order a DRV8320 EVM and launchpad to evaluate this and check if it can spin your motor.

Hi,

I don't know either it is a better idea to buy different drivers and test them on the basis of hit & trial. If you are sure that DRV8320EVM will work with my motor specifications then I will go for it. Secondly, there are different EVM module available for this driver. Which should i choose one or you can explain the difference between them would be better. Thanks

Ali,

I see no reason why this wouldn't work with the DRV8320 EVM but I cannot guarantee. There could always be an unforeseen issue with any project.

To decide which kit is best, please let me know:

Do you need an integrated buck? The R devices have an included buck which can be used to generate your on-board logic power or similar.
Do you need current sense amplifiers? The devices ending in "3" have three built in current sense amplifiers for measuring Low-Side current of all three phases.

Thanks for your reply,

I just want to use the driver to run the motor with Analoge and PWM input. I don't need anything else. The PWM and analog input will be applied through controller and potentiometer. The motor should run at 35000RPM when there are a max analog input and vice versa.

I have no code or GUI for running the DRV8320 board from an Arduino. In an effort to give you the easiest solution that I can easily support, I am recommending the EVM and a Launchpad.
